John is a professional marine engineer. He started his career in the Merchant Navy, leaving as a Chief Engineer in 1987 to complete his Engineering Council Pt 2 Examinations for Chartered Engineer status and join Lloyd’s Register as a surveyor.
His 28 year career with Lloyd’s Register took him from London to Dubai, to South Korea, to China, and back to London, carrying out plan approval, marine component, new construction, and ships in service surveys along the way, whilst moving through surveying, operations management, technical performance, recruitment and surveyor training.
He retired in 2016 and now devotes his attention to teaching at various universities in the Far East and supporting the work of IMarEST through accreditation of degree programmes and graduation training schemes, as well as assessing experiential learning for the Membership Committee through career appraisal and Professional Review Interviews.
He supports MLA students on their research journey through the MSc in Engineering for Marine Professionals and takes great pleasure in enabling the students’ discovery of their own research potential in a working environment
