Kate has an academic background from Portsmouth and Solent Universities in the UK where she led a variety of research projects and contributed to the teaching programs. 

Kate is a highly experienced maritime researcher of 23 years, with a focus in the social sciences, and has an extensive list of published and referenced works. Her international research expertise focuses on the human side of shipping including seafarer’s well-being and mental health, sustainable management and leadership and on-board safety culture, and gender diversity, equality and inclusion.

Kate has recently delivered two phases of ISWAN’s Social Interaction Matters (SIM) project and was a consultant director of research for the European Union ‘Promoting Women in Maritime’ WESS Project for ETF and ECSA’s joint program. She also regularly speaks on many maritime human skills’ topics and is highly involved in various networks in this area.
