On Friday 3 July, MLA College was proud to attend and sponsor the Maritime Human Factors Conference, hosted by CHIRP and The Nautical Institute in collaboration with the International Maritime Human Factors Symposium (IMHFS). The conference offered an engaging forum for sharing evidence-based insights and real-world experience. The event brought together maritime professionals, researchers, academics and industry leaders to explore how human factors continue to shape safer, more effective maritime operations.
The conference provided a valuable platform for discussing the role of human performance in decision-making, leadership and operational safety. Through expert presentations, real-life case studies and interactive discussions, delegates shared practical insights into improving safety across the maritime sector.
The programme began with “Navigational Resilience: Why Your People Matter?”; the second session focused on Safety Culture, followed by a panel discussion on how organisations can create open, supportive and accountable working environments. The final session explored the Integration of Non-Technical Skills into Voyage Planning, showing how leadership, teamwork and situational awareness are now just as important as technical skills.
MLA College was delighted to see current students, academics and alumni taking part in the conference, creating valuable opportunities to engage with professionals from across the maritime industry. Their involvement reflected the College’s strong connection to the wider sector and its commitment to supporting learning beyond the classroom. By attending sessions, contributing to discussions and hearing directly from industry experts, participants were able to deepen their understanding of the challenges and opportunities shaping maritime operations today. Events such as these also provide an important space for exchanging ideas, building professional networks and staying informed about the latest research, emerging trends and best practice across the industry.
One of the strongest messages throughout the day was that people remain at the centre of maritime operations. While digital technologies and artificial intelligence continue to evolve, speakers emphasised that the greatest improvements in safety and performance come from combining technological innovation with human expertise, judgement and effective collaboration.
