MLA College alumni Gordon Foot is preparing to embark on his latest fundraising challenge, taking on an eight-day expedition through the Arctic Circle to raise awareness of homelessness among seafarers while supporting the Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest (QVSR).
The Nordic Challenge 2026 will begin today when Gordon travels to Stockholm before boarding the Arctic Circle Train for a 15-hour journey north to Abisko, Sweden, more than 200 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle. From there, he will undertake a demanding trek through the remote landscapes of Swedish and Norwegian Lapland, travelling from mountain hut to mountain hut before finishing his journey eight days later in Narvik, Norway.
While the challenge is physically demanding, its purpose extends far beyond the expedition itself. Gordon hopes to raise awareness of homelessness among seafarers, veterans and others who rely on charities for support, while highlighting the invaluable work carried out by organisations such as the Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest.
The expedition has been designed with sustainability at its core. Following a “leave no trace” approach, Gordon aims to demonstrate that adventure and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. By taking only memories and leaving only footprints, the challenge reflects the importance of protecting the natural environments that are so closely connected to the maritime sector and the wider blue economy.
As someone with more than four decades of experience in the maritime industry, Gordon has consistently used his platform to inspire others and promote careers at sea. Through his fundraising campaigns, he hopes to encourage people to broaden their understanding of the maritime profession, challenge outdated stereotypes and recognise the vital contribution seafarers make to global trade and society.
The Nordic Challenge is the latest in a series of remarkable fundraising achievements. In recent years, Gordon has successfully completed the Costa Rica Eco River Challenge, a skydive in 2024 and his ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2023, each supporting worthwhile charitable causes while inspiring others to set ambitious goals and make a positive difference.

His continued dedication to charitable fundraising, raising awareness of important issues affecting the maritime community and inspiring others through his actions demonstrates the lasting impact our alumni can have within the industries and communities they serve.
Gordon is self-funding the entire expedition, ensuring that every donation made will go directly to the Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest. The charity provides accommodation, welfare and long-term support for seafarers, veterans and others in need, helping people rebuild their lives during difficult times.
