Dr Tamsin Dobson is a Chartered Engineer (IMarEST) and has accrued over 12 years’ experience working in the marine engineering industry (onshore and offshore). Tamsin is dedicated to interdisciplinary research and higher education and enjoys working on the interface between marine science, sustainability and engineering. She has proven skills in lecturing, sustainability, structural integrity assessments and biocorrosion research and has master’s level qualifications in both zoology (marine biology) and marine engineering. The work that she carried out for her research masters in zoology was a precursor to the planned deployment of a small-scale tidal energy turbine off the coast of the Isle of May (Firth of Forth) and included research into how marine animals interacted with small-scale oceanographic features.
Since 2010, Tamsin has worked at sea as a ship’s Engineer for CCGV and JST, managed the dry-docking of MSSC vessels, led submarine maintenance projects and surface ship design projects as a Lead Engineer for Babcock International and completed a PhD at the University of Bristol (U.K.). Tamsin’s PhD in Mechanical Engineering evaluated the complex interactions between corrosion and biofouling and their cumulative effect on the fatigue behaviour of welded copper alloys. She is the lead author on a number of peer-reviewed scientific publications relating to marine corrosion, biofouling and how marine engineering projects can affect marine life (ecological sustainability).
